Value Stream Mapping

The April agenda will include discussion from companies that are involved in Lean and six sigma as well as those that may need assistance in the implementation of these programs or just beginning. The outcome of the meeting is to design a system where we can share our approaches as well as offer opportunities for people to visit and learn some of the implementation differences between organizations. Jim Prosser, City Manager on Cedar Rapids, Tim Charles, President Mercy Hospital, Dr Jim Levett, Chief Medical Officer at PCI, and Jay Marino, CR Schools Associate superintendent will join the attendees to discuss their perspective on the role of leaders in organizational change. Presentations will be 15 minutes with discussion time scheduled to provide learning for those organizations interested in the concepts of lean and the lessons learned in the journey. |

Learning Exchange
Knowledge Management is about to become a reality within the Lean/6 Sigma network!! One of the most valuable parts of our network meetings is the opportunity to learn from one another. Members of the network have mentioned in the recent past that they would welcome the opportunity to observe other organizations when they are conducting some type of improvement event (Kaizen, Value Stream, etc.). Therefore, the first meeting of 2008 for the Lean/6Sigma network will be a Design Session working on designing a system where members of the network would be able to attend and benchmark one another’s improvement events. For example, let’s say St. Lukes’s has a Lean event coming up in March….they have room in the event for 3 observers. They would post this opportunity for network members to attend and register to attend. Plan now to attend and participate in designing this “system”. |

Sharing of “Toolkit” Ideas
If you work in a Quality Management of any type (i.e. ISO, Lean, 6Sigma, etc.), you have specific tools that you have adopted (and many times adapted) from conferences or experts that assist you in your improvement efforts. This month bring along those examples to share with others – templates for meetings, templates for report-outs – anything you are willing to share with other members of the group. The best type of learning comes from our peers….plan now to attend and share your tips and tricks of the field. |

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Tour
It is time for another road trip!!! If you have any type of Quality Management program whether it is Lean, 6 Sigma, a mix of the two, TPM, TOC, or ISO….you realize that you can always learn from the best practices of others. For our September meeting, the Lean/6Sigma Learning Network has been invited to tour a couple of different areas within the University of Iowa Hospital for our September 12th meeting. Because it is helpful to our tour hosts to know how many people are coming on the tour, we will ask that you RSVP by Friday Sept. 7th to deb@iowaqc.org if you are planning to attend. Lean Tools to Improve Patient Safety
Please join us as we tour St. Luke’s Hospital to show how application of the Lean tools is improving patient services. We will spend time in the Emergency Room and the Lab, and we will talk to some of the people involved to see how the changes are not only helping the patients, but the staff and physicians as well. We will conclude with some general discussion about how Lean is helping St. Luke’s improve in all areas. |
