Process Mapping in Various Forms
Join Pat O'Connor and Jeff Hoefer as they share the Alliant Energy process of fuel handling as done for an electric power generating station. They have captured this process in Value Stream Map, Process Map and Spaghetti Diagram forms to identify opportunities for improvement. The process captures inventories, bottlenecks and movement of material & operators. There is some complexity to the process as things happen in parallel, the process has branches and the flow of material is continous vs in discrete units. They will also lead participants in a discussion on the pros and cons of the various forms of mapping. |

The Personal Side of Process Improvement
No matter what type of process improvement approach or tools you use it still comes down to people working well together to make things happen. During this meeting you will experience a framework for self-understanding and development. Research suggests that a good understanding of self, both strengths and development areas, enables individuals to build effective strategies for interactions, and can help individuals better respond to the demands of their environment – both personally and professionally. |

Learning Exchange
Knowledge Management is about to become a reality within the Lean/6 Sigma network!! One of the most valuable parts of our network meetings is the opportunity to learn from one another. Members of the network have mentioned in the recent past that they would welcome the opportunity to observe other organizations when they are conducting some type of improvement event (Kaizen, Value Stream, etc.). Therefore, the first meeting of 2008 for the Lean/6Sigma network will be a Design Session working on designing a system where members of the network would be able to attend and benchmark one another’s improvement events. For example, let’s say St. Lukes’s has a Lean event coming up in March….they have room in the event for 3 observers. They would post this opportunity for network members to attend and register to attend. Plan now to attend and participate in designing this “system”. |

Where is your pain?
While we are striving to improve the workplace for others with our quality improvement programs (Lean, Six Sigma, ISO or Baldrige), what about us as practitioners? Let’s make this session what one attendee called a “therapy session” to talk about our current challenges as we look forward to the new year. As Red Green says…..”we’re all in this together”. |

Sharing of “Toolkit” Ideas
If you work in a Quality Management of any type (i.e. ISO, Lean, 6Sigma, etc.), you have specific tools that you have adopted (and many times adapted) from conferences or experts that assist you in your improvement efforts. This month bring along those examples to share with others – templates for meetings, templates for report-outs – anything you are willing to share with other members of the group. The best type of learning comes from our peers….plan now to attend and share your tips and tricks of the field. |

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Tour
It is time for another road trip!!! If you have any type of Quality Management program whether it is Lean, 6 Sigma, a mix of the two, TPM, TOC, or ISO….you realize that you can always learn from the best practices of others. For our September meeting, the Lean/6Sigma Learning Network has been invited to tour a couple of different areas within the University of Iowa Hospital for our September 12th meeting. Because it is helpful to our tour hosts to know how many people are coming on the tour, we will ask that you RSVP by Friday Sept. 7th to deb@iowaqc.org if you are planning to attend. If you care to carpool to the meeting with others, meet at 6:45 am in the Iowa Quality Center parking lot. |

As awareness is raised on what causes failure in these efforts, how can these concerns be prevented or addressed? |

Exploring the Use of the SIPOC Model in Continuous Improvement
Whether you are using Lean, Six Sigma or ISO to guide your continuous improvement program, the SIPOC, which depicts a systems view of a process, is a useful tool to assure that you are looking at the “big picture” of the process rather than focusing on just one piece of the puzzle. Plan now to join this discussion group to understand the tool in more depth and to experience first hand how to develop a high-level process map using the SIPOC for a process within your organization. |
